Nigel Pearson is waiting for the right opportunity to open up after admitting he questioned his ability after leaving Derby.

Pearson was appointed by the Rams last May but was suspended in September after a row with owner Mel Morris and left the club in early October with Derby struggling in 20th in the Sky Bet Championship.

Steve McClaren took over at Pride Park and has overseen their rise up the table - they now sit five points outside the play-off places in eighth with 16 games remaining.

"After the situation that I had at Derby I'm going to have to be really excited to come back into it," Pearson told BBC Radio Five Live.

"I believe very strongly that you've got to commit totally to a job, if you're asking that of players.

"When you go through a negative experience like I've been through, I think it does somewhat taint your perception of how you work sometimes.

"I'll know when the next opportunity is the right one for me and I look forward to doing that."

Pearson's previous role was at Leicester City, who he guided to safety at the end of the 2014-15 season before being fired, and he expects the reigning Premier League champions to avoid relegation.

Live Nissan Super Sunday

After the heroics of 2015-16, Leicester are only a point above the bottom three heading into the Nissan Super Sunday clash with fellow strugglers Swansea.

Pearson added: "I think they will stay up, but they're going to have to find the answers themselves over the next few weeks."
