Goals from Peter Kennedy and Danny Dichio in first half injury time put The Rams in the ascendancy but Tommy Miller's penalty and Darren Bent's header earned Ipswich a share of the spoils.
In an open encounter, it was a surprise that goalscoring chances were scarce as Shefki Kuqi headed into the arms of Lee Grant but the match sprung into life on the stroke of half time.
Fabien Wilnis fouled Dichio 30 yards out and from the resulting free kick, the on loan Kennedy hammered a searing shot beyond the helpless Kelvin Davis.
And before the half time whistle had blown, The Rams extended their lead when Dichio struck a 25-yard shot past Davis after previously having a subdued display.
But Ipswich showed great resilience in the second half - a hallmark of all Joe Royle's teams - and they richly deserved the point they chiselled out.
The visitors pulled the first goal back on 56 minutes when Ian Westlake's surge into the box was halted by Pablo Mills and Miller duly converted the spot kick.
The equaliser arrived on 65 minutes when Jermaine Wright's break down the right flank ended with a cross to the far post which Bent gleefully headed home.
Town could have snatched an unlikely winner but Finnish international Kuqi headed off target after a pinpoint cross from Jim Magilton.
