The Rams were reduced to 10 men in the game, with Spaniard Manel dismissed after a clash with Peter Clarke.
It was a low note in a pretty uniformly dismal day for Derby, but Coventry have been impressive of late and deserved their win.
Scott Shearer had suppressed some early pressure from The Rams with some good saves, and Leon Osman hit the bar for the visitors.
But Coventry established a lead through Gary McSheffrey who turned in after The Sky Blues failed to clear their lines following a good save by Lee Grant from Stephen Warnock's shot.
In the 33rd minute Coventry added a second from in-form Julian Joachim, Warnock nodding down well for the diminutive striker to lash home.
The most controversial moment of the match left Derby reduced to ten men, with referee Iain Williamson not hesitating to show a red card after Manel left Clarke prostrate.
