Derby County fuelled Crewe 's relegation fears with a 2-1 success at Gresty Road.Derby County fuelled Crewe Alexandra's relegation fears, and boosted their own promotion aspirations, with a 2-1 success at Gresty Road.
Goals from Grzegorz Rasiak and Tommy Smith put The Rams in the driving seat, but they were hanging on at the finish after David Vaughan scored in the last minute.
The Rams took the lead on 16 minutes with the first real chance of the game after Rasiak's header, from Inigo Idiakez's corner, eluded the Crewe defender manning the line.
George Burley's side dominated the first half, with Rasiak firing a left-footed shot off target and Marcus Tudgay also failing to test Ben Williams.
A Kenny Lunt free kick was nudged over the bar by Adie Moses for Crewe before Idiakez's powerful free kick whistled over the frame of the goal.
Crewe emerged from the interval with a greater sense of purpose, as Steve Jones volleyed at Lee Camp before a neat free kick from Lunt drifted just wide of the upright.
Northern Ireland international Jones then wasted a good chance after finding space in the box before Crewe shot themselves in the foot on 74 minutes.
They were sloppy in possession near the left touchline, with Vaughan carelessly playing the ball through to opponent Smith, who coolly slotted past Williams.
Idiakez could have sealed the game but shot wide before Vaughan snatched a lifeline for the hosts in the final minute with a stunning effort from the edge of the area.
The Railwaymen could have pinched a point in injury time after Jones raced through, but he was thwarted by a fine save from Camp.
