Poole has been looking for a new club since being released by Bolton Wanderers at the end of last season.
New Rams boss Phil Brown, who worked with Poole at The Reebok Stadium, has handed the 41-year-old the chance to move into coaching.
The shot-stopper will primarily be charged with the task of helping Rams keepers Lee Camp and Lee Grant to improve.
But Poole has also been registered as a player, with Brown feeling the former Birmingham City keeper will be a key figure at Pride Park.
"I worked with Kevin for four years at Bolton and I know that he'll be a real asset on the training ground," Brown told the club's official website.
"He's also useful to have around as back-up for the two Lees, but it's his coaching skills I'll be calling on.
"I like his attitude and his coaching philosophy."
