Billy Davies believes the signing of Robert Earnshaw will prove to be astute.Derby boss Billy Davies believes the capture of Robert Earnshaw will prove to be an astute acquisition, but not the last, as he closes on further signings for the Premier League new boys.
A quiet close-season at Pride Park was punctuated on Friday afternoon with the signing of Earnshaw, in a £3.5million deal, that breaks the club's previous transfer record.
Derby's £3.5million offer triggered a release clause in the Welshman's contract at Carrow Road, and while Davies concedes negotiations were not straight forward, he is confident he has bagged a striker of pedigree.
"I think offers in modern day football are notoriously difficult to get through," he told Sky Sports News.
"I've brought a proven goalscorer to the club and I'm delighted to have him now for the new season.
"I think if you look at his goalscoring record at all levels, the Championship, the Premiership and internationals, it is first class. We know he is a fox-in-the-box, a handful at times and we know he can score goals.
"It was difficult to negotiate the deal but great credit to everyone at the club. It was excellent timing to get such an excellent player to the club.
"We're delighted to get a proven goalscorer. We do want to bring more quality to the club and I'm very hopeful we can bring good news to the wonderful supporters of Derby.
"It depends how deep the chairman's pockets are, I'll keep dipping into them. We're looking forward to concluding some deals and bringing quality players to the club."
Davies' own future at Derby has been the subject of conjecture, but the Scottish tactician has revealed he is currently engaged in talks with his board about a fresh deal.
"I've said all along that I've got two years remaining on my contract and it was always my intention to see it out.
"I'm now, at this moment, in discussions with the board to extend it. I'm hoping that it can be concluded in the next few days and then we can hopefully add more quality to the squad."
