The former York City striker, who joined Wednesday mid-way through the 1998/99 season, is said to be on his way to Deepdale to discuss a move with Lillywhites boss David Moyes.
The 22-year-old has also been linked with a switch to join former Owls manager Danny Wilson at Bristol City, but it is unlikely that the forward will want to drop down two divisions after playing in the Premiership last term.
Despite the strong link to North End, Wednesday secretary Alan Sykes would only state that they were in talks with a plethora of clubs.
"We are currently in talks with a number of teams about Richard Cresswell," Sykes stated. "He will go with Paul Jewell’s blessing and we hope a deal will be done in the next 48 hours."
If Cresswell does move to Preston, it will be the end of a long chase for Moyes after he had a bid for the Bridlington-born forward rejected in February.
