It is understood that the Leicester striker's loan contract includes a clause stating that North End have an option to buy the 23-year-old striker for an agreed fee of £750,000 at the end of the season.
The fee demanded by City boss Peter Taylor will see The Foxes recoup the money that they initially paid to Sheffield Wednesday for the former England Under-21 star in September 2000.
During the intervening six months, Cresswell has made just three league starts for Leicester and he will now be relishing the prospect of cementing a regular first-team place with North End.
Meanwhile, Preston keeper Tepi Moilanen has received an international call-up from Finland ahead of the World Cup qualifier against England at Anfield on March 24.
