Ainsworth, who was linked with a similar loan move to Bristol City last month, had fallen out-of-favour with Dons boss Terry Burton recently, since coming to Selhurst Park for £2million from Port Vale in November 1998.
It will be the 28-year-old's second spell with the Lancashire club, after originally joining the club in January 1992 and making 100 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals.
His first spell with Preston came to an end when he moved to Lincoln City but he now looks set to make a return, as The Lilywhites aim for the Division One promotion play-offs.
On the Ainsworth loan move, Preston boss Kelham O'Hanlon said: "Gareth joins us on a one month loan and he will add competition for places.
"He knows the club and the fans and he will be doing his very best to help our cause."
