The former Scotland manager has put the signing of a hit-man at the top of his priority list with The Lilywhites currently having three senior strikers in the squad.
Ricardo Fuller, Richard Cresswell and David Healy have all scored for the Deepdale club this season but Brown wants to get some cover in for the remainder of the current campaign.
Brown said: "I only have three strikers at the club and I really need to bring somebody else in.
"They are the only players who are scoring goals for us at the moment and I can't expect them to keep that going throughout the season.
"Fortunately, we can still make a move for somebody because we aren't affected by the transfer window.
"It's something we need to sort out because we need to start climbing the table and stop looking over our shoulders."
Preston have been the draw specialists in Division One of late, with the latest result being a 1-1 draw at home to Watford.
Meanwhile, Preston's cost cutting exercise has forced the Lancashire outfit to combine the club's youth development department with the Centre of Excellence.
By doing so, former first team coach Gary Peters has decided not to apply for the new position of the combined youth set-up and he has decided to leave The Lilywhites and his position as director of the Centre of Excellence.
Peter's departure ends a ten-year association with the Deepdale club.
