Crystal Palace caretaker manager Kit Symons endured a miserable afternoon at Deepdale, being sent off for a professional foul which led to Preston's second goal in their resounding 4-1 win.
Preston were always on top and went close through Dickson Etuhu, Chris Lucketti and David Healy before Etuhu broke the deadlock shortly after the interval, drilling in the rebound after Healy's shot had been parried by Thomas Myhre.
Just moments later Palace were two down and reduced to 10 men, as Symons saw red for pulling back Ricardo Fuller and Graham Alexander smashed in the resulting penalty.
The Eagles threatened to fight their way back into the game when they pulled a goal back against the run of play, Michael Hughes releasing Shaun Derry who finished with an emphatic shot.
Fuller, Healy and Lucketti all went close again for dominant North End before Eddie Lewis made sure of the points by adding the third when he turned in Fuller's right-wing cross.
Healy then set the seal on a comprehensive win for Craig Brown's side when he slid in a shot after being played in by Richard Cresswell.
