Ricardo Fuller scored the only goal of the game after just three minutes as Preston maintained their good run of form by beating Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium.
The Jamaican striker capitalised on some hesitant defending to beat Jason Brown after Chris Hope had allowed David Perpetuini's header to run into the penalty area.
Brown did well to gather in a 25-yard strike from Preston full back Graham Alexander, before Paul Shaw had Gillingham's first chance with a shot from 20 yards that was saved by Jonathan Gould.
Nicky Southall, Paul Smith and Shaw all had shots which failed to test Gould as the Gills had their best spell of the game before the break.
Andy Hessenthaler and Nayron Nosworthy both shot over as Gillingham threatened towards the end and Preston were then grateful to a last-gasp block from Michael Jackson to deny Nosworthy an injury-time equaliser.
