The hosts were by far the superior team througout against an injury hit Preston side and deservedly took an early lead.
Influential winger Glen Little continued his superb recent form, and his determination saw him capitalise on a defensive error to unselfishly cut back to Robbie Blake who sidefooted home confidently.
England Under-21 international Richard Chaplow then dallied too close to his penalty area, and was indebted to keeper Brian Jensen who produced a great save to deny a first time strike by Michael Keane.
At the other end only a superb Andy Lonergan save denied Burnley's Tony Grant from the edge of the box.
The second half saw Burnley start strongly, but despite half-chances for Blake it was Preston that clawed themselves level when Ricardo Fuller's solo run was unfairly halted in the area in the eyes of referee David Pugh.
Graham Alexander slotted home from the spot and Fuller then nearly carved a winner with a similar run, before being dismissed in the final stages for a petulant slap at Little.
