Dickson Etuhu scored twice to give Preston the points against Rotherham.Dickson Etuhu scored both goals as Preston began life after Craig Brown's departure with a 2-0 win over Rotherham at Deepdale.
Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Brighton was the final straw for Brown, who paid the price for a dismal second half of last season.
However, the team he left behind put in a positive performance for caretaker manager Billy Davies to claim a deserved victory and leave Rotherham still looking for a first success this season.
The home side had better early chances, with Richard Cresswell's header deflected wide and Chris Lucketti heading over from the resulting corner, and it was no surprise when they took the lead after 15 minutes.
Eddie Lewis did well down the left and when his cross was flicked on by Cresswell, Etuhu found himself unmarked at the far post and was able to turn a soft header past Mike Pollitt.
Etuhu's second finish, on the stroke of half time, was much more emphatic, as he collected a pass from Marlon Broomes and lashed a rising drive past beyond Pollitt from 10 yards.
In between Lewis missed two good chances to add to Preston's lead, prodding a shot straight at Pollitt from six yards and then forcing himself wide with a poor first touch and allowing the Rotherham keeper to smother his left foot shot.
Rotherham created few chances, although Andy Lonergan produced a flying save to keep out Richie Barker's header and Chris Sedgwick sliced a shot well wide after making space for himself in the penalty area.
Simon Lynch, just on as a substitute, put the ball in the net for a third time for Preston, but his strike was ruled out for offside, while Etuhu could have had a hat-trick but his close range shot was charged down.
