Dave Connolly had opened the scoring for The Foxes with a fine volley, but Preston grabbed a share of the points through a wonderful Paul McKenna free kick.
Defender Martin Keown had been in the right place to deny both Richard Cresswell and Youl Mawene's efforts from reaching goalkeeper Stuart Taylor in the opening exchanges before Connolly broke the deadlock on 25 minutes.
The Irish striker volleyed home into the top corner from outside the box, after Preston had failed to fully clear an Alan Maybury cross.
Preston battled their way back into the game, with Dion Dublin clearing off the line from McKenna and Taylor denying Chris Sedgewick.
But Preston were not to be denied and McKenna showed his quality with a fine curling free-kick after Jordan Stewart brought down Sedgwick on the edge of the area.
