Preston secured a 2-0 victory over Burnley to leave the visitors without a win in 18 games.
Preston increased the pressure at the top of the Championship with a 2-0 win in the derby with relegation-threatened Burnley at Deepdale.
And while Preston edged closer to Birmingham and Derby at the top of the table, Burnley extended their miserable run to 18 games without victory.
The visitors went close first, however, when a Wade Elliot free-kick was floated in for Kyle Lafferty after three minutes, but the youngster's header was brilliantly turned away by Andy Lonergan in the Preston goal for a corner.
The game continued at a frenetic pace, but there were few chances for either side and the play was scrappy.
But, true to form, Preston took the lead on 33 minutes through England Under 21 striker David Nugent, who claimed his 16th goal of the season with a half-volley from the edge of the area.
Burnley came back into it a little in the second half, and were unlucky not to equalise when substitute Graham Branch crashed the ball against the crossbar.
However, Preston had chances, too, and Patrick Agyemang took advantage in the 75th minute when he scooped the ball over Danny Coyne to make it 2-0.
