Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has responded to recent speculation by reaffirming his commitment to the club.

Kirkland, who joined Wednesday over the summer on a free transfer, has confirmed he was given special dispensation and time away from the club to deal with a private matter which has now been resolved. The England international says he is fully focussed on returning to training and challenging for a first-team spot at his new Hillsborough home. He told the club's official website: "There was a private matter I had to deal with and I'm pleased to say that it is now resolved. The manager gave me the time I needed and now I'm looking forward to joining the squad for pre-season next week. "I'd like to thank the manager, the chairman and the vice-chairman for helping my situation by being so completely understanding. "I'd also like to say thank you to the Sheffield Wednesday supporters for their patience. I can assure them I am 110% committed to the club and really looking forward to next week and the Championship season ahead."
