Keith Downing has been appointed as the head coach of the England U20 team on a permanent basis.

The 50-year-old former Wolves and Hereford midfielder has been in the role on an interim basis since July.

He had previously been on the coaching staff at West Brom and also had a spell as caretaker manager at The Hawthorns.

Downing, whose time with the Baggies included a spell as England manager Roy Hodgson's right-hand man, will take control of his first U20s match as permanent boss on March 27, when Ghana are the visitors to Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium.

"We've enjoyed our time together so far and I'm really looking forward to continuing working with the players," he told the Football Association's official website.

"We've got a good blend of experience in the squad and the U20s set-up is an age group that has only been represented by England for a couple of years now, so it gives the players that have come late into the system that opportunity to experience what it takes to play for their country."
