After months of speculation surrounding his future, Hughes opted to leave West Brom in the summer and move to Midlands rivals Coventry in a £5,000,001 deal.
However, the move to Highfield Road has been anything but a success and Hughes has failed to recapture the form which saw him hit 86 goals in 155 starts for The Baggies.
Hughes's Sky Blues goal-return of just eight in 26 has had some Coventry fans questioning the decision to buy him.
Things have changed at Coventry since his arrival, with a new manager and chairman, and the new Highfield Road regime could be willing to cash in on a player who has failed to live up to expectations.
Megson has confirmed that he would love to bring Hughes back to his former stamping ground, but admits he would struggle to finance the deal.
"I would have Lee Hughes back tomorrow," said Megson.
"He is the best goalscorer in the division. But the wages he is on there and the fee he went for means he goes out of our pond and into another one.
"But if we could I would love to have him back at the club."
