The Baggies icon joined the Midlands rivals for £5 million and left West Brom short of firepower, especially when Jason Roberts was plagued by injuries.
Despite their promotion to The Premiership, Megson feels his side could have done with Hughes's guile in front of goal last term.
"As a footballer and as a person, I thought Lee was fantastic. He was West Bromwich Albion,Ç¥ said the Hawthorns chief.
"Lee moved onto Coventry and scored something like 15 goals in a side that supposedly struggled.
"From my own point of view, I didn't want him to go at all. I really thought he was a massive asset to this football club, a better player than I thought.
"I think Lee would be an asset to any Premiership side and I was surprised that no Premiership team came in for him last year.
"Our goal scoring was not as good as we would have wanted last season because Lee had gone and Jason (Roberts) was injured for 90 percent of the time.Ç¥
There had been talk of Hughes returning to The Hawthorns in a cut-price move but that has not materialised and the ÇÿGinger Ninja' must now concentrate on helping The Sky Blues return to the English top-flight.
