The 36-year-old has been training with The Robins during the summer, with the veteran hit-man only returning to the Whaddon Road club last week following a knee operation.
Manager Bobby Gould is keen to discuss a deal with Taylor but he is waiting until the striker is fully fit before opening talks.
The former Leeds United, Bristol City and Bolton Wanderers man has attracted interest from Walsall, Port Vale and Conference side Telford United but he is ready to talk to Cheltenham Town first.
"We've had another chat and unfortunately with the programme as it is we cannot fit in any reserve games," Gould told the club's official website.
"Bob is willing to train with us until he feels comfortable with the situation.
"He has told us that we will get first refusal when he feels the time is right to sign a contract with a club.
"We'll just wait on his fitness and see how he responds over the next seven, 10 to 14 days."
Gould may also need to bring in a defender after it was revealed that Shane Duff would be sidelined for a month with ankle ligament damage.
