The West Brom striker was involved in a fatal car crash in the early hours of Sunday morning in Coventry city centre and is charged with causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Hughes, formerly with Coventry City, faces a custodial sentence if found guilty on both accounts.
The 27-year-old's Mercedes crashed with a Renault Megane, leading to the death of Mr Douglas Graham.
The Meriden-based footballer spoke only to tell the court his home address and date of birth, as the hearing lasted five minutes.
"He has been totally devastated by the events that have taken place recently," commented solicitor Nick Freeman.
"He wishes to express his deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased and hopes that the other parties injured have a full and speedy recovery."
Hughes is to return to training with The Baggies on Thursday.
