West Brom boss Bryan Robson remains hopeful of adding to his squad in the transfer window.Robson has been frustrated in his attempts to bring in new faces with a deal for Argentine ace Mathias Almeyda falling through and talks over Burnley's Richard Chaplow stalling.
The Hawthorns chief was disappointed to find out his move for Almeyda had collapsed with the player indicating he might retire.
"He (Almeyda) had seen the stadium and was very positive in the way he spoke about the club and the challenge ahead," Robson told Sky Sports News.
"He would have balanced the squad nicely, but things like this happen.
"He went back to Argentina, had a few problems and his agent says he is going to retire from football.
"At 31 it is a young age to retire, but successful players do sometimes retire very early."
Robson is now waiting to see if his move for Chaplow will prove successful, with Burnley holding out for more than is currently on offer from West Brom.
"We've been in ongoing negotiations for the last couple of weeks," added Robson.
"I have left it with the chairman and the Burnley chairman and hopefully Chaplow will become a West Brom player, but that's down to negotiations."
