The Baggies forked out £3 million to take Ellington from Wigan Athletic earlier this week and his arrival could impact on Earnshaw's prospects at The Hawthorns.
The Wales international was only on the bench for the opening game of the season against Manchester City last weekend and faces a fight to regain his place.
Earnshaw is unsure why he was overlooked for the 0-0 draw and has questioned the merits of manager Bryan Robson's decision to also bring in Ellington.
"You have to ask the manager why I am not playing," said Earnshaw.
"I need to be playing but it doesn't do any good to be worrying about it.
"I was a bit surprised when he bought Ellington as we have got a lot of strikers already. I thought that was a bit strange.
"It has not shaken my confidence but I just want to be playing."
Robson concedes Earnshaw may be ruffled by the capture of Ellington but has challenged the former Cardiff City ace to fight for his spot in the team.
"I know some people are going to be unhappy, like Robert," admitted Robson.
"But it is up to them to prove they are worthy."
