After David James was dropped from The Three Lions' squad, Kirkland was promoted to number two.
Kirkland has returned to the international scene this season after he sealed a season-long loan deal from Liverpool to West Bromwich Albion.
After a series of injuries at Anfield, the 24-year-old is now fully fit and proving himself once again at West Brom.
Despite his return to full fitness, Kirkland has admitted he was shocked at being recalled almost immediately to the England squad.
"I didn't expect to be back in [the squad] so quick," said Kirkland.
"I didn't expect to be in at all. And before the season started the thought of going to the World Cup wasn't even in my mind."
Despite only just coming back, Kirkland does have the aim of securing the first choice role.
"He's [Robinson] done very well, so it's going to be hard to dislodge him," Kirkland continued.
"But you have to be confident that you can be England number one because there would be no point in playing if you didn't.
"Though the most important thing for me now is West Brom and playing well for them.
"I've come to West Brom with something to prove.
"I don't view this as a stepping stone. I'm starting again and trying to rebuild my career.
"A lot of nice stuff has been said about me over the years but now is the time I have got to prove it. I've got to prove to myself that I can be a goalkeeper in The Premiership.
"I have only played 60 or 70 games in four or five years, so that's not good. I've got to put that right and I'm looking to do that now."
