The Stuttgart defender has been a long-term target for Baggies boss Bryan Robson, who considered a bid during the summer.
Robson decided against pursuing his interest in the 25-year-old and, instead, snapped up Curtis Davies from Luton Town.
But reports suggest that Robson is back on Stranzl's trail and is musing over a £2.5 million offer in January.
Stranzl joined Stuttgart in 2004 from 1860 Munich and is a reliable member of the Bundesliga's outfit's squad.
He played the full 90 minutes for Austria in the 1-0 defeat to England on Saturday, when Robson ran a personal check on the stopper.
The West Brom chief will continue to assess Stranzl before determining whether the Austrian is capable of adding more solidity to his backline.
