Colchester United suffered a rare defeat at Layer Road on Tuesday as West Brom moved ahead of Birmingham City into second spot with a 2-1 win.
The U's had gone 14 matches unbeaten at home, but were undone by a quick-fire double after half-time from Paul McShane and Diomansy Kamara.
Johnnie Jackson pulled one back for Geraint Williams' side, however, they were unable to muster a leveller - leaving them two behind sixth-placed Cardiff City.
The visitors started brightly with Kemal Izzet deflecting Richard Chaplow's shot wide with defender Neil Clement heading the resulting corner over.
Kamara then fired wide from 20 yards out, although The U's had the final say of the half with Jackson testing Dean Kiely from well outside the box.
West Brom cut loose after the break with McShane putting them ahead after 51 minutes and shortly after the in-form Kamara got his name on the scoresheet.
Both sides had further chances to find the back of the net but West Brom held on to their lead to inflict Colchester's first home defeat since last August.
