Albion have won just one game since their 2-1 victory against Manchester United in September, and were booed off the field after losing 2-0 to Norwich on Saturday.
They now sit just two points above Fulham and Crystal Palace, who occupy two of the Premier League's relegation spots.
The Norwich defeat was Albion's third in a row, and Jones feels it was an opportunity missed.
He told the Birmingham Mail: "We knew going into the game it was a massive match for us.
"We did not want to be losing three on the bounce but unfortunately we lost.
"We looked on this game as the start of the busy Christmas period and we wanted to start it well."
Former Preston defender Jones says his team-mates now need to refocus their energy and make sure they secure three points against Cardiff, who are one point behind them.
He continued: "We're going into games thick and fast now so we can't dwell on it too long.
"We need to look at the video, learn from our mistakes and improve our performance and hopefully get that next week as soon as possible.
"We know we have to improve our team performance and not think about the past and how many points we should be on if we had not had bad decisions or hard luck at times."
