The French striker, who has three goals in 11 appearances this season, has been linked with a number of Espanyol's Primera Liga rivals since the transfer window opened.
Albion emerged as potential bidders on Thursday and, speaking on deadline day, Mel confirmed the rumours were correct.
"Today is a long day," he told the club's official website. "At the moment there is no news but I hope for at least one more player.
"There are a lot of names but one striker is possible here today.
"But getting Anichebe playing good matches, Saido Berahino is a good player in the three position and Vydra too.
"Therefore it is not dangerous if another striker does not come in.
"Thievy is a young player, who scores goals, and he is a possibility."
The Baggies boss also revealed that a number of Championship clubs are targeting midfielder Graham Dorrans, while defender Goran Popov and forward Markus Rosenberg could also leave.
