Defender Chris Baird is undergoing a medical at West Brom, according to Sky sources.

The 32-year-old Northern Ireland international is available on a Bosman free transfer following the end of a short-term contract with Burnley.

Baird made seven appearances during Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League last season, having joined the club on a six-month deal in January.

He moved to Turf Moor following the end of another short-term contract he signed with Championship club Reading in summer 2013.

Baird began his career at Southampton, where he made 68 appearances between 2001 and 2007 before moving to Fulham, where he enjoyed a successful six-year spell.

He was highly regarded at Craven Cottage, making 127 appearances and scoring four goals before being released by the club last year.

West Brom are currently looking to strengthen their squad under new head coach Alan Irvine and new head of recruitment Mervyn Day, who joined the club last week.

The Midlands club have already signed former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott on a free transfer.

They are also keen to keep hold of Craig Dawson and George Thorne, who have seen their transfer requests turned down.
