Pre-season friendly round-up: Aston Villa, Leicester and West Ham draw

Bojan made his return from injury for Stoke City in their 2-0 pre-season defeat to Brentford, while a host of Premier League sides had frustrating draws against lower league opposition.

Aston Villa, Leicester City, Swansea City and West Ham had to all settle for a draw, but West Brom and Premier League new boys Watford and Norwich City all enjoyed victories.

Swindon Town 1-4 West Bromwich Albion

James Morrison grabbed a brace as the visitors coasted to victory at the County Ground.

The striker scored his first goal with a half-volley from close range after Town failed to clear a free-kick, before scoring a tap-in from Stephane Sessegnon’s pass.

Victor Anichebe punished Yaser Kasim’s error to get on the scoresheet, while Sessegnon scored late on from close range after Ideye Brown's shot was saved.

Kasim redeemed himself with a consolation goal for the League One side.

Brentford 2-0 Stoke City

Mark Hughes’ side suffered a defeat at the hands of the Championship side at Griffin Park.

The Potters welcomed back Bojan after a seven-month knee injury lay-off but went down to goals from Andy Gogia and Stuart Dallas.

Winger Gogia’s shot on 32 minutes struck Ryan Shawcross’ head and looped over goalkeeper Jack Butland and flew into the net.

And Marinus Dijkhuizen’s side sealed victory 16 minutes from time when Dallas scored from a tight angle following a corner.

Walsall 1-1 Aston Villa

Tim Sherwood’s Villa side squandered a lead and had to settle for a draw in the Midlands derby at Banks’s Stadium.

The visitors, who handed Idrissa Gueye his debut, led through Callum Robinson’s finish from close range on 21 minutes.

Walsall equalised on the stroke of half-time when Anthony Forde’s free-kick took a wicked deflection off the wall and wrong-footed 'keeper Jed Steer. 

Villa striker Libor Kozak was denied a penalty in the second half after he was held back by Andy Taylor in the box.

Mansfield Town 1-1 Leicester City

Claudio Ranieri's second match in charge of Leicester ended all-square against the League Two Stags at Field Mill.

David Nugent gave the Foxes the lead with a curling effort into the bottom corner from 20 yards after 10 minutes.

Mansfield's Matt Green levelled with a penalty after Dean Hammond brought down Mitchell Rose on 27 minutes.

And the home side went agonisingly close to a surprise win, hitting the woodwork twice in the second half.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Swansea City

Andre Ayew scored his first goal for Swansea since his move from Marseille at the City Ground.

The Ghanaian forward opened his account with a fine individual strike on the hour mark when he controlled Kyle Naughton’s pass, outmuscled his marker and fired a low shot past Dorus de Vries.

But Dougie Freedman’s side levelled 10 minutes later when Jamie Ward’s cross was headed in by Robert Tesche.

Eder thought he had scored the winner for the Swans late on with a volley but his effort was ruled out after he was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Augsburg 1-2 Norwich City

The Canaries fought back from a goal down to beat the German side with two late goals at the WWK Arena.

Piotr Trochowski had given the hosts the lead on 51 minutes with a 30-yard strike.

Youssouf Mulumbu equalised for Alex Neil's side with 13 minutes remaining after a slick passing move.

And Mulumbu then turned provider to tee up Lewis Grabban to net the winner from close range.

Dundee United 0-1 Watford

The Hornets made it four wins from five friendlies with Troy Deeney scoring the winner at Tannadice.

Deeney scored with a header in the second half from Juan Jurado’s cross after the Premier League new boys took a quick free-kick.

United went close to an equaliser in the second half when substitute Charlie Telfer’s free-kick was well saved by Giedrius Arlauskis before Chris Erskine was also denied by a fine stop by the Watford 'keeper.

Charlton Athletic 0-0 West Ham United

Slaven Bilic’s side struggled to break down the Championship team at The Valley, less than 48 hours after their victory on penalties against Birkirkara in Malta.

Diafra Sakho had the Hammers’ best chance after being played through by Dimitri Payet but his effort was blocked by goalkeeper Nick Pope.

The Addicks nearly snatched victory in the dying minutes with substitute Karlan Ahearne-Grant’s effort tipped wide by Darren Randolph.

Birmingham City’s unbeaten pre-season record came to an end as Burton Albion won 2-0 courtesy of goals from John Mousinho and Phil Edwards.

Blackpool defeated St Johnstone 1-0 after a first-half strike by triallist Jim McAlister.

Wolves drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury Town after Nouha Dicko's header for Kenny Jackett ‘s side was cancelled out by Tyrone Barnett.

Goals from Nathan Delfouneso and Craig Conway gave Blackburn Rovers a 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic.

Tom Adeyemi scored his first Leeds United goal in their 2-1 defeat to German side Hoffenheim.
