The Bhoys skipper joined Wolves after being disappointed at Celtic dragging their feet in negotiations over a new deal.
The Glasgow giants did eventually offer him a new contract, but the offer came as he was on his way to join Glenn Hoddle's side - and he refused to go back after giving his word to the former England manager.
McNamara now says that he would never have left Parkhead had the club offered him the deal in the first place.
"I gave Celtic an opportunity to sign me on a new contract but I was a little surprised and disappointed it took them so long," said McNamara.
"It could all have been started before the end of last season and if we'd started talking then I don't think I'd be with Wolves now.
"It took them a long time to make an offer, whereas Wolves made me feel important to their plans.
"I told Celtic I was leaving and they spoke to me as I travelled down to Wolves, but I'd already given my word to Glenn Hoddle that I'd sign for him. There's no ill will towards Celtic. I have a great affection for the club and I always will.
"The change of manager wasn't really a factor. I've only spoken twice to Gordon Strachan since he went into the manager's office and neither discussion involved my contract situation."
