Caretaker boss delighted to get point from Toon trip

Wolves caretaker boss Terry Connor hailed the attitude of his players after they produced a spirited display against Newcastle despite a turbulent fortnight off the pitch. Connor, who was assistant to former manager Mick McCarthy, was appointed by the Premier League strugglers on Friday following McCarthy's sacking earlier this month, even though a string of high-profile names had been linked with the role. He enjoyed a positive result on his first game in charge as the Midlanders fought back from two goals down to seal a 2-2 draw at St James' Park. "One thing I will say is at the training ground the lads have been superb and the staff around the training ground have been superb," he told Sky Sports. "We just kept our own council and kept working day-to-day and I think you saw the results in the performance today. "It's the first game and we get some reward for coming up to Newcastle in front of 52,000 Geordies. We just want to continue that through the rest of the season." Wolves went into the break two goals behind but Connor insists it did not make him doubt his decision to take the job.

Comeback

He added: "No, I still wanted to do the job and I knew the lads had played reasonably well in the first half, although conceding two sloppy goals. "We asked them to tighten up and make sure Newcastle didn't get a third goal and if we got the next goal it would change the complexion of the whole game. "We knew if we got one we were playing reasonably well enough to go and get a second and it turned out to be the case." The interim boss says he has been in touch with McCarthy on a regular basis since his sacking and revealed the Yorkshireman wished him good luck before the game. "I've been in contact with Mick most days, just chatting things through and chatting about the situation and what's going on," he said. "But he sent me a good luck message today by text and also had the courtesy to ring as well and we had a good chat before we got on the team bus to go."
