After passing a medical, the Finnish number one is expected to be eligible for the upcoming Premiership fixture with Chelsea.
It is a case of second time lucky for Gordon Strachan, who tried to sign the 30-year-old during his spell as manager of Coventry City.
"He is the right age and price and has a good character and he will increase competition in that area," Strachan told the official Southampton website.
"That has worked well for us in the past.
"Brett Ormerod came in and James Beattie and Marian Pahars both went on a scoring run, Fabrice Fernandes came in and Chris Marsden ended up Player of the Year."
The swoop means Paul Jones is likely to lose his regular place in the starting line-up, while reserve Neil Moss could be allowed to join Luton Town, if Joe Kinnear follows up his interest in the former Bournemouth man.
In other news, Saints chairman Rupert Lowe has dismissed talk of a move to Liverpool for defender Wayne Bridge.
Reports have claimed The Reds have lodged a £9 million bid, but Lowe said: "We have not had any approach for Wayne and are not expecting one.
"People now know we are not a selling club and I don`t anticipate letting any of our players leave before the transfer window closes this weekend."
Meanwhile, another player on his way out of Tynecastle is defender Robbie Neilson.
The 22-year-old has joined Scottish First Division outfit Queen of the South on loan until December.
