The versatile ace picked up the injury after an accidental collision with Norwich striker David Nielsen.
He was forced off with the injury and scans have shown that he has torn ligaments in his left knee.
The Republic of Ireland international admitted it was a major disappointment to pick up a knock at such a crucial stage of the season.
"It is bitterly disappointing - I am absolutely sick. The doctors said six weeks although it might be slightly earlier if I heal quickly," Delap told the club's official website.
"But I have to accept it could take six weeks which would be around the date of the semi-final if we get through. It is a decent draw and I am just hoping the lads win through for me.
"It was very unlucky really. He caught me with a block tackle and we both connected with the ball at the same time. He knocked the ball against me which opened my knee out and there are two tears in the ligament.
"I had actually had a scan on my knee while I was out with the calf because it had been giving me a bit of pain. But nothing showed.
"This is a different part of the knee but the staff were very surprised when they saw me back again so soon.
"It is not good news - and this is all I needed because it will rule me out of some important league games and probably Ireland's Euro 2004 qualifiers at the end of March."
