Southampton goalkeeper Paul Smith has been sidelined with an injured thumb.Southampton goalkeeper Paul Smith will be sidelined for up to two months with an injured thumb.
The former Carshalton Athletic and Brentford custodian injured the thumb in training two weeks ago and was told to rest the injury.
However, the thumb has since failed to heal and further scans have shown that Smith has a tear in one of the tendons and has needed surgery to repair the problem.
The Saints number two will now need up to eight weeks to recover from the hand injury, thus giving the chance to Alan Blayney to become the understudy to number one Antti Niemi.
Smith has yet to make a first team appearance for the South Coast club this season after moving from The Bees for £500,000 last January.
