The Saints are struggling for form and even with a new boss, Harry Redknapp, Oakley feels they are in for a long campaign.
Oakley, 27, has endured 15 months on the sidelines through injury and admits he has been surprised at how far the club have fallen in his absence.
''We are in a dire situation and have to start winning games soon,'' said Oakley.
''The last time I played we were unbeaten and were playing teams off the park.
''We used to pass teams to death down here and we're not doing that at the moment.
''At home we could beat the big sides like Manchester United, but at the moment we're not even beating the lower teams.
''The goalless draw with Charlton was a classic example. A year or so ago I think we would have beaten that team, but that is just confidence.''
