Newell praises character

Mike Newell praised the character of his side after Dean Morgan's late winner.

Luton manager Mike Newell praised the character of his side after Dean Morgan snatched a last-minute winner to defeat Southampton 3-2 on Tuesday.

The newly-promoted Hatters have made a sensational start to life in The Championship, recording back-to-back victories against Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Luton, last season's League One champions, have bridged the gap with ease, dispatching sides who were two leagues above them last term.

"I think they deserved it," Newell purred. "There was some fantastic football played in both halves and to come back from 1-0 and 2-1 down just shows their character."

Newell also praised Tuesday's match winner Morgan, who scored on his home debut following a summer move from Reading.

The former Hartlepool boss explained: "I thought Dean's legs had gone to be honest.

"We all know that he's got ability, we just need to keep getting it out of him for longer periods and every week that will be our aim."

Southampton manager Harry Redknapp was phlegmatic in defeat and believes that few sides will relish a trip to Kenilworth Road this season.

He said: "Three minutes into injury time, they switched play quickly with Morgan coming off the left and he's hit a wonder goal.

"Luton played well though. They're a good side and make no mistake Mike Newell has got them playing.

"It will be a difficult place for anybody to go this year," added Redknapp.

Southampton, like Palace and Norwich, have failed to hit the ground running, with all three relegated clubs still searching for their first win of the new season.
