Southampton defeated Southend United 3-0 in the Carling Cup first round.Southampton are through to the second round of the Carling Cup after a convincing 3-0 win at Southend United.
Goals from youngsters Dexter Blackstock and Nathan Dyer just before half time at Roots Hall saw The Saints on their way to the next round, with substitute Brett Ormerod deflecting a third goal home in the dying stages.
Harry Redknapp fielded a youthful side against their League One hosts and despite a bright start from The Shrimpers, Southampton tested Southend goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan with efforts from Blackstock and Yoann Folly.
Steve Tilson's side provided little threat to Saints custodian Paul Smith before the break, with the lively Mitchell Cole having a simple effort stopped by the former Brentford keeper.
It was a minute before the break that Southampton made the breakthrough, as Folly's corner from the right found an unmarked Matthew Mills to head straight at Flahavan and the rebound fell to Blackstock (pictured), who poked the ball home for 1-0.
Southend then turned around and nearly levelled but Smith made a fine diving save to Shaun Goater's far post header from Carl Pettefer's left foot cross.
The tie was then sealed on the stroke of half time, as Prutton was given too much space to shoot left footed at Flahavan.
Despite saving Prutton's initial effort and Kenwyne Jones on the rebound, teenage starlet Dyer pounced to slot the loose ball home for his first senior goal for The Saints.
The second half saw The Shrimpers make an effort to get back into the tie and despite Spencer Prior forcing Smith to tip the ball over from his header in the half, The Saints always looked in control.
In fact, Blackstock was unlucky not to get a second goal after substitute Dennis Wise picked him out with a cross from the left but his far post header was well saved by Flahavan.
In the dying stages, Southampton sealed the tie with a third goal after Rory Delap's fierce right foot strike struck Ormerod in the midsection and deflected into the net.
