Baird stays a Saint

Southampton defender Chris Baird has signed a new deal at St Mary's.

Southampton defender Chris Baird has ended speculation over his future by signing a new deal at St Mary's.

Baird's current deal was due to expire at the end of the season and it was feared he may move on.

However, the club have moved to tie him down to a new three-year deal.

Baird, who has won a place in the side since the arrival of George Burley, was delighted to pledge his future to the Championship outfit.

"I am really pleased to have got it all sorted and now I am already looking forward to next season," Baird told the club's official website.

"This is the longest contract I have had; previously it has always been a two-year deal. But the chairman has given me a fantastic contract and I am very grateful.

"Obviously there could be a lot of changes for next season but I am very happy that I will be part of it.

"I love it here. It is a great club and a good place to live and I did not want to move. But I did need to be playing first-team football."
