George Burley was full of praise for midfield duo Pele and David Prutton after the pair were both on target in the 2-0 victory over Leicester.
The contest was delayed for 45-minutes while surface water was cleared from the St Mary's pitch but when the game did kick-off, there was only likely to be one winner.
Southampton's goalscorers were, though, somewhat more surprising as neither player is noted for an ability to find the net on a regular basis.
Burley reserved a special mention for Prutton, a player who has made just three appearances since recovering from an ankle injury sustained in January, ironically against Leicester.
"Pele has been magnificent since he has been in midfield and he has played a major part in our recent good run," said Burley.
"He is strong, he has got pace and he's good on the ball - and now he has added goalscoring prowess to his game.
"David is such a strong character - a real `hundred percenter' - and he's been out for a long time after a nasty ankle operation."
Leicester boss Rob Kelly admits his side were never at the races on the South Coast, relieved that they have a chance to atone for a below par display with a game on New Year's Day.
"That was an untypical Leicester performance. There was no lack of effort but we just never got going in any department.
"But the one positive is that when you play like that you want another game to come round as quickly as possible and it does. So we have a chance to put it right.
"There are no excuses about the pitch from our point of view, and Southampton had the same delay as us. It was just a disappointing performance.
"We'll have a look at the video and work out the reasons we played so poorly. The players are bitterly disappointed but they are already preparing for Sunderland."
