Iron aim to bring in striker

Scunthorpe are aiming to sign a striker on loan, with Leon Best reportedly a target.

Scunthorpe United are aiming to sign a striker on loan, with Southampton's Leon Best reportedly a prime target.

Ahead of Thursday's loan deadline, Iron boss Nigel Adkins has confirmed he is keen to pep up his attack.

Though he did not comment on rumours of an interest in Best, Adkins acknowledged he is hopeful of bringing in a new forward.

"I have had a lot of interesting telephone conversations with a number of different managers," Adkins told the Scunthorpe Telegraph. "At the moment, we are just waiting for some answers.

"The type of players we are looking at are those already in and around the fringes of the clubs where they are at now.

"It is up to those managers to decide whether they want to release them out on loan."

Best is back at Southampton after a recent loan spell at Yeovil Town and he also featured for Bournemouth earlier in the campaign.

But Adkins' hopes of signing the speedy front man could be threatened by League One promotion rivals Oldham Athletic and Nottingham Forest, who are also in the market for reinforcements.
