Stoke manager Mark Hughes has an update on their pursuit of West Brom striker Saido Berahino

Stoke manager Mark Hughes says talks with West Brom to sign Saido Berahino have stalled and has admitted the deal could be in doubt.

Hughes confirmed last week that talks had reopened between the clubs after Albion rejected an initial bid for the striker earlier in the window.

Ahead of the Potters' clash with Manchester United on Saturday, Hughes divulged that the two parties have so far been unable to agree a transfer fee and he does not expect movement in the near future.

Tony Pulis dismissed Stoke's bid for Berahino and doubts if West Brom will be able to sign Odion Ighalo by the end of this transfer window

Hughes said: "It sways from one end of the scale to the other. I said a fortnight ago I was more confident that something might be done. It's fair to say it's probably swung the other way again.

"It is down to price, among other things. Over the last few days it hasn't really progressed. There hasn't been any progress for quite some time, and if I'm honest it doesn't look like there will be too much progress in the days to come.

"I might be wrong, because things can change very, very quickly, but people seem very entrenched in their views and their positions, and when that happens it can be very difficult to move it forward."

West Brom want Odion Ighalo to be Berahino's replacement and talks have begun with Watford, but Sky sources understand that any deal is dependent on an agreement being reached for Berahino to leave.

Newcastle tried to sign him the following January and Stoke had a £20m bid rejected last summer, while the player himself has struggled for first-team opportunities.

Berahino has only made five appearances this season, without scoring, while he scored only four times in 17 outings last term.
