Icelandic star Gunnarsson fired the home side ahead after 19 minutes only for Jermaine McSporran to level the match five minutes later.
However, Chris Iwelumo restored the home side's advantage, before Paul Emblem was sent off for violent conduct.
Stoke made their man-advantage pay off when Gunnarsson grabbed his second goal just before half time whilst Andy Cooke and Marc Goodfellow completed the rout late on.
Brentford kept up the pressure on the leading pack with a 3-0 win over Wrexham at Griffin Park thanks to goals from Stephen Hunt, Ben Burgess and Ivan Igimarsson, whilst Cardiff dropped two points in a 1-1 draw away to Blackpool.
Two goals from Lee Peacock and an own goal from Andy Duncan were enough to lift Bristol City to a 3-0 win over Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.
Queens Park Rangers came from a goal behind to grab all three points in a 3-2 away win against Chesterfield at Saltergate.
David Reeves fired the home side ahead in the second half only for Andy Thomson to equalise from the penalty spot on the hour mark for his 15th goal of the season.
Danny Shittu and Matthew Rose then both scored to put the visitors two goals up, before Jonathon Howard scored a consolation for the home team. Shittu was subsequently sent off for a second bookable defence.
Swindon Town's home match at the County Ground against Huddersfield Town was called off due to a frozen pitch.
