The 34-year-old enjoyed six and a half years with the Potters before leaving for Sheffield United in 1996 and he now plans to move into management having called time on his playing career.
Stoke are on the look-out for a new manager after Steve Cotterill resigned last week to join Sunderland as Howard Wilkinson's assistant.
"I'm 34 now and realistically I only had a season or so left in me," Sandford told Sheffield United's official website.
"I've been turning out for Woking in the Conference for the past couple of months but I am still being plagued with the neck problem I had whilst with (Sheffield) United.
"I intend to dip my toe into the water with regard to staying in the game and I have put an application in to register my interest in the vacant manager's position at another of my old clubs, Stoke."
Meanwhile, Chris Iwelumo will miss this weekend's clash with Wolves after undergoing a minor knee operation.
The tall hit-man picked up the problem in the reserve meeting with Oldham and the club hope that he will not be out of action for a sustained period.
