A goal from Stoke midfielder Kris Commons settled a scrappy match against mid-table rivals Coventry at the Britannia Stadium.
Commons enlivened a disappointing match when he lashed in a 25-yard free-kick after he had been brought down by Stephen Warnock.
Stoke suffered an early blow when keeper Ed de Goey left the field on a stretcher after being knocked unconcious by Gary McSheffrey's challenge, which earned the Coventry striker a yellow card.
Neil Cutler replaced the former Holland international, and he was forced to make a save from Graham Barrett's 25-yard shot.
Cutler then made another fine save to deny Barrett, before Warnock crashed a shot against the woodwork from 30-yards.
Karl Henry tested Sky Blues keeper Scott Shearer from distance and as the game petered out, Steve Staunton was off target with a curling free-kick.
