Sweeney moves to Potters

Stoke City have completed the signing of Millwall midfielder Peter Sweeney.

Stoke City have completed the signing of Millwall midfielder Peter Sweeney.

The promising Scotland Under-21 international becomes new boss Johan Boskamp's first signing since his appointment as a successor to Tony Pulis.

Millwall had offered the 20-year-old a new and improved deal in an attempt to keep him at The Den but Sweeney elected to seek pastures new.

Sweeney has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal and the two clubs will now have to come together to negotiate a price for the player's services - if they fail to do so then the fee will be decided by a tribunal.

Stoke's director of football John Rudge has spoken of his delight at landing a player who he believes can go on and fulfil his undoubted potential.

"We are delighted to get him,'' Rudge told the club's official website.

''He is a young player with plenty of potential and his best years are ahead of him.

''He did well in The Championship with Millwall last season and, although still very young, has proved he can compete at this level."
