Stoke fear midfielder Luke Chadwick may have played his last game for the club after a long-standing groin problem flared up again on Saturday
Chadwick, who is on loan from West Ham until January, was withdrawn shortly before half time in The Potters' 1-0 home defeat to Reading.
Chadwick received the green light from a specialist ahead of the Royals clash but manager Johan Boskamp concedes they can no longer take risks on the former Manchester United man's fitness.
Boskamp admits Chadwick's inclusion against Reading was a mistake with the player's performance suffering as a result.
"Maybe he will miss two weeks, maybe four months, we don't know. But he can't go on like this," said Boskamp.
"The specialist says he can go on playing but he only lasts 40 minutes and in that time he isn't our Lukey.
"In hindsight it was a mistake to put an injured player on the field and we won't do that again."
Chadwick has played in all but one of Stoke's matches this season but could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
