The Potters have now reached 40 points for the season with six matches remaining, while holding 10th spot in the table and are 14 points clear of the relegation zone.
Their highest position since the Premier League came into existence in 1992 is 11th, but Ireland believes they can move up the table even further - despite being six points adrift of ninth placed Newcastle.
He said: "We have to keep chasing ninth that's all we can do and it's what we want to do.
"We don't want to settle for 10th, because we don't want to get complacent. We want to keep going and going.
"You never know. There could be something riding on the last game of the season for us at West Brom - and that's what we want.
"We don't want to go there and just have a friendly game. We want to go and hopefully be in a position to secure ninth."
