With only one goal to show from their first eight matches of the new Division Two season, Whitton has brought in Taylor for training this week.
The 31-year-old was recently released by Grimsby Town after signing a short-term contract with the Division One strugglers.
Taylor has an impressive record of scoring, having notched up 114 goals in 350 leagues appearances with a number of clubs.
His career includes spells with Norwich City, Birmingham City, Leyton Orient, Brentford and Gillingham.
With The Gills, Taylor moved to Manchester City for £1.5 million in November 1999 before taking another big-money move to Wolves for £1.55 million in August 2000.
He failed to earn a first team place at Molineux and eventually made a free transfer move to The Mariners last March.
Taylor initially had his contract cancelled in June by Grimsby before they turned around and signed him again on a short-term deal late last month.
He will now try his luck in Division Two with the Layer Road outfit and hope he can help The U's solve their goalscoring drought though The Mariners still retain his player registration.
